Hell one time I was testing A/V packages for my organization I was having trouble finding anything malicious. Granted in 15 years of having a Windows box I've never gotten anything more than the usual cookie removal prompt on them either (and usually I just disable that anyway). Thankfully I don't have anything that requires java to be web enabled so I leave that disabled, which has been the vector for what few Mac exploits have cropped up over the past few years. I don't run any myself and haven't since my first mac in 1994. Their application firewall seems pointless, as does many feature sets in most security products (I've been using Vipre on Windows for about 5 years now, lightweight, not a lot of fluff). Just that Intego, being solely focused on OS X legitimately is better at remediating in the few situations there is an infection.

You'll probably never need it, but if you do, you'll be glad you had it.ĭon't misunderstand me, I don't advocate for AV software on the mac. I still run Sophos just because I feel confident it will take care of me in the highly unlikely event that an actual virus ever does creep into my world.

So, yes it is possible to get a virus, but highly unlikely. But, it was effectively only a minor annoyance. It was aggravating as hell because it spread so easily. Stick a clean disk in and it too would become infected and restart the next poor bastard's Mac.

If you so much as inserted an infected disk (typically diskette or Zip disk) you would be infected and your Mac would instantly restart. This was in the late '90s and it affected a lot of people. However, the first one was a legit Mac virus called AutoStart. The one before that was from stupidly following a porn link to a malicious site a few years ago. As is usually the case, it only affected Windows and was no threat to me. Sophos quarantined the offender and alerted me. There were several attachments, so I just downloaded them all at once. The most recent was passed to me by a client as an email attachment. I've had exactly 3 viruses since getting my first Mac in 1991.
